The icy treats that evolved into the ice cream we enjoy today have their origins thousands of years ago.

The Chinese and Romans each had their own forms of ice cream that the elite among them could enjoy. Roman emperors dispatched runners into the mountains to fetch snow from the snow-covered peaks to bring back for the emperor to enjoy. Servants then flavored the snow with fruits and fruit juices. Historians have found evidence that Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) enjoyed snow mixed with honey and fruit.

The origins of more sophisticated iced treats are shrouded in the mists of history. Rumors persist that Marco Polo (1271 - 1295) brought a recipe for a sherbet type of treat back with him when he returned from China. The first true ice creams originated when cooks placed bowls of cream or an egg based pudding called custard into containers of ice to freeze them. The process of stirring the concoction to prevent ice crystal formation created the icy treat we know today. The Italians became the leaders of making ice cream, a status they still hold today.

The first recipes of ice cream in the colonies appear in the middle of the Eighteenth Century. The most popular ice creams during this period were fruit and vanilla flavored treats. President George Washington enjoyed ice cream, as did Thomas Jefferson. Chocolate ice cream appeared around 1769. Philip Lenzi, a New York confectioner, placed the first advertisement that historians know of on May 12, 1777 in the New York Gazette. He advertised that his customers could enjoy his gastronomic delight, ice cream, almost every day in his shop.

Written in a "this day in history," format, each of the two books in this collection of North American colonial history events includes 366 history stories. The historical collection of tales includes many well-known as well as some little-known events in the saga of the United States. The easy to follow "this day in history," format covers a wide range of the people, places and events of early American history. I is the first book in my series, 366 Days in History Series. Each book includes 366 stories of American history. It is availble, with many of my other titles on gardening, Indiana places and history and United States History, at the Walnut Street Variety Shop in downtown Batesville, Indiana.

I hope you enjoyed this podcast and thank you for listening.
